In regards to the comment "T Bone’s solution is to provide a number of formats on the DVD audio disc, so the listener can utilize the format of choice but have access to better if desired."

Why bother to offer multiple formats? Just put the BEST format available on the disc. That way (1) you have maximal space available for the best version and (2) what's the point? Just let people take the "best" format and compress it how they see fit. Maybe I want to compress them for my iPod, maybe I want to burn them as a conventional audio CD to take in my car (Yep, no MP3 decoding on my car's CD player) Perhaps the RIAA will balk that it's not fair use for me to take the music and convert it to some other format, and that I should BUY that other format. That's an argument for another day.

I do appreciate his comment about the "best" sounding audio, but 99% of the time my listening is done in places like the car, sitting in a waiting room somewhere, doing exercise, or working outside. Rarely am I listening to music JUST to listen to music. I don't think I'm in the minority here, and I think it's more important that music is so accessible. Perhaps all those great classical works (whether you think "classical" means Beethoven or Pink Floyd, it really doesn't matter) will get more exposure because they're now convenient to listen to. What's more important - exposure to music on a constant basis, or just those few times you can carefully take the record out of it's jacket and listen where the turntable is?

Now, if we could just outlaw those oh-so uncomfortable iPod ear buds.
